Las Vegas, Nevada -- Northwestern's men's soccer team fell to 2-1 after a 6-1 loss to UC Santa Barbara at the UNLV FILA Invitational Friday, Sept. 9.

The Gauchos scored first as UCSB midfielder Eric Avila chipped a cross over NU goalkeeper Misha Rosenthal (Miami, Fl./Gulliver Prep) towards UCSB forward Jonathan Davis following a throw in. Davis shot the ball back across the frame and into the side netting, past Rosenthal at 11:02 in the match.

The Gauchos once again had a throw-in from the same spot on the field, except this time it was Pat Scott on the throw. Scott heaved the ball just outside the corner of the Wildcat goalbox. Davis trapped the ball with his chest, shoving it across his body and onto his left foot. He snapped a right-footed shot just inside the near post to put Santa Barbara up 2-0 in the 19th minute of the match.

The Wildcats narrowed the lead in the 26th minute, as junior forward Brad North (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) was able to control the ball after the UCSB goalie Kyle Reynish punched it away. North lunged with his right foot to get on the back end of the loose ball. North's shot went across the frame and past the recovering Reynish into the side netting for his second goal on the season.

Northwestern went into halftime down 2-1, but looked to establish itself on offense coming out of the break.

UCSB struck again in the 56th minute as Avila and UCSB midfielder Eric Frimpong exchanged passes through the middle of the NU defense that resulted in a shot. Gaucho forward Ivan Becerra was able to control the rebound, and sent it passed Rosenthal to make it 3-1.

Ten minutes later, Tyler Rosenlund scored again from a Frimpong pass, making the score 4-1.

UCSB senior Nate Boyden made it 5-1 with a play off a free kick just outside the NU box. Coming off an indirect kick, Boyden lifted the ball over the NU defenders and passed Rosenthal, making it 5-1, UCSB.

In the 82nd minute, the Gauchos scored their sixth goal, as UCSB freshman Chris Pontius put one passed NU goalkeeper Justin Pines (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) to make it 6-1.

The Wildcats fall to 2-1 following the loss. Northwestern will be back in action at 1 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 11 against UNLV.
