EVANSTON, Ill. -- Fresh off a successful East Coast road swing that had the 'Cats beating Fairfield and Yale, Northwestern's women's field hockey team is back in Evanston looking to continue its winning ways.
Northwestern will have two home matches this weekend at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex. First, the Wildcats face Central Michigan University at 1 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 9. The 'Cats then take on the Virginia Cavaliers at 1 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 11.
Last weekend, Sept. 2-4, the Wildcats beat Fairfield 4-3 in overtime, thanks to Megan Sieberg's (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee Valley Country Day) match winning goal. Freshman forward Jill Putnam (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) notched her first collegiate goal as well as her first multi-goal game in that match. The Wildcats followed that performance by beating Yale 2-1, largely due to Meghan Small's (Bethlehem, Pa./Moravian Academy) two-goal performance. For her efforts on the weekend, Small garnered Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Central Michigan's record is 1-1 this season after falling to St. Louis, 3-2, and topping New Hampshire, 5-2. Central Michigan is led by senior forward Alisa Folk and junior forward Moyra Beluzzi, who have three goals apiece on the season.
Virginia is 2-1 this year, following wins over Virginia Commonwealth and Ball Sate, and a loss to Old Dominion. Senior forward Katie Phillips leads the Cavaliers with four goals and eight total points.
Central Michigan and Virginia are also set to play a neutral site match at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 10, at the LBT Athletic Complex.
