EVANSTON, Ill. -- Field hockey junior goalkeeper Sherri-Anne Nyberg (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna Secondary) has been named this week's Hilton Garden Inn Athlete of the Week. No Northwestern men's squads were in regular-season action last week, so no male winner was named.
Nyberg held 2004 national semifinalist Maryland in check for 60 minutes in Saturday's season opener against the Terps. Nyberg made 14 saves -- the second-best total of her career -- including stops of the first 10 Terp shots of the second half.
Until a late penalty stroke call gave Maryland the lead, Northwestern either held the lead or was tied with the Terrapins for nearly the entire game, thanks in large part to the play of Nyberg in the cage.
