Dillon Dougherty Making a Run at U.S. Amateur; Reaches Saturday's Semifinal Round

Aug. 26, 2005

ARDMORE, Pa. -- Senior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) won his quarterfinal match Friday afternoon at the 105th U.S. Amateur Golf Championship, and now advances to Saturday's semifinal round. That round, along with Sunday's 36-hole match final, is being televised by NBC (3 p.m. CDT).

Dougherty, who will play his fourth and final season with the Wildcats in 2005-06, reached the semifinal round with a victory over Kent State's Ryan Yip, 4 and 2. This year's tournament is being held at the Merion Golf Club (6,846 yards, par 70).

Dougherty, 22, now faces J.C. Deacon in the semifinals. Deacon, a native of Canada, will be a fifth-year senior at UNLV this fall. The other semifinal pits 36-year-old Austin Eaton or 20-year-old Anthony Kim, both U.S. natives, against 24-year-old Edoardo Molinari of Italy.

Dougherty, who won the 2004 Alister MacKenzie Invitational, is playing in his first Amateur. The two finalists receive invitations to next year's Masters and U.S. Open tournaments. The champion also earns a trip to the British Open.
