FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Northwestern's men's soccer team came back from a 1-0 first-period deficit to win its exhibition match against Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne, 2-1, Saturday night.
I.P.F.W. struck first at 11:16 into the match, as Victor Webb beat Northwestern goalie Justin Pines (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) to the far side. Northwestern responded by stepping up the offensive intensity and rattling off the next 12 shots of the game.
At 76:48, sophomore Clark Kiesling (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor) tied the match on a header following a corner kick from Kyle Moore (Madison, Miss./Madison Central). Northwestern had dominated offensively most of the match, but could not score up to this point. The goal swung the momentum in the `Cats favor, and only 8:09 later, Northwestern was able to capitalize from that momentum.
At 84:57, Northwestern freshman Tyler Voigt (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) got behind the Mastodon's defense and was all alone heading towards I.P.F.W. freshman goalie Joshua Howell. After Howell made the initial save, Voigt gathered the rebound, and pounded home the second-chance to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead with a little more than five minutes to play.
I.P.F.W. took one more shot at 87:00, but it flew wide of the goal, all but wrapping up the game for Northwestern.
Statistically, Northwestern dominated in almost every category. The Wildcats out-shot the Mastodons 18-4, and the `Cats defense allowed I.P.F.W. only two shots-on-goal.
The match was part of the annual I.P.F.W. Soccer Showcase, which brings together some of the best collegiate, high school and club teams in the country.
Northwestern's next action will be a home exhibition match against Bradley at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23.
Soccer America recently released its 2005 preseason poll, with Northwestern earning a No. 17 national ranking.
