EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's 2005 field hockey season started on a positive note Saturday, after the Wildcats won their exhibition match against Miami (Ohio), 5-0, at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex. Four Wildcats scored and goalie Sherri-Anne Nyberg recorded a shutout in the match.

Katie Charles (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) scored the first goal of the match at 9:52, following a perfect assist from Christina Foley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth). Only 3:18 later, Cassie Miller (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) set up Meghan Small (Bethlehem, Pa./Moravian Academy) for the Wildcats second score of the match.

Northwestern kept up the intensity and continued to put pressure on the RedHawks defense after the early goals. At 15: 35, Holly Palin (Mequon, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) received a pass deep inside the circle, spun, knocked home an unassisted goal to put the Wildcats up 3-0.

After halftime, Palin picked up where she left off, scoring another unassisted goal 27:57 into the half. Following the goal, the Wildcat defense stepped-up and put an end to any second-half offensive threats the RedHawks posed, including two penalty corners that were thwarted by the `Cats.

The final goal was scored when Megan Sieberg (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee Valley Country Day) hit home a Palin centering pass at 39:05, giving the Wildcats a 5-0 lead.

"It was a great day," said head coach Kelly McCollum. "We put pressure on them offensively and defensively. We were able to attack them with speed and numbers. The whole team contributed and we were able to keep putting pressure on them throughout the whole match."

The `Cats open up the regular season at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27 against Maryland.

Field hockey home matches are held at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex.
