EVANSTON, Ill. -- Following a Big Ten Championship bid that fell just short last weekend, No. 19 Northwestern returns to Ann Arbor as the No. 2 seed for the Big Ten Tournament. The Wildcats open the tourney at 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon against the No. 7 seeded Purdue Boilermakers.
NU is the No. 2 seed for the first time since 1998 and for the third time in program history. The Wildcats captured their only Big Ten Tournament title in 1982, when the event was used to determine the conference's champion. Since the tourney was reinstated in 1995 as a means to determine the Big Ten's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament, NU's best finish was a second-place run made in 2003.
Should the Wildcats get past Purdue, they will face the winner of No. 3 seeded Iowa versus No. 6 seeded Penn State at 4 p.m. Friday, May 13.
The tournament championship game will be televised live at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday, May 14, on CSTV.
