ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- On Friday, Northwestern and the 10 other Big Ten women's golf teams played in miserable weather conditions. On Saturday, the conditions deteriorated even more -- temperatures in the mid 30s, a mix of rain and snow and strong winds with gusts up to 35 miles per hour.
Despite the winter-like weather, the teams were able to complete the third round and Northwestern remains in fifth place after 54 holes. A fourth and final round is scheduled for Sunday, but a forecast that is calling for six or more inches of snow could wipe out the final 18 holes. A decision will be made Sunday morning whether or not to cancel the final round.
One player who did not let the poor weather affect her play was southern California native Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood). All Kim did on Saturday was go out and shoot the best third-round of the tournament -- a 2-over 74. That was two strokes better than what tourney leader Kristen White (Ohio State) did in the third round.
Kim's 74 vaulted her from 16th to eighth place overall. She is now 14-over (79-77-74=230) for the tournament.
Senior Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) fired a 13-over 85 and is now 20-over (74-77-85=239) after 54 holes. She is in 14th place.
Sophomores Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Middlesex School) both moved up in the individual standings after turning in respective scores of 81 and 82 -- respectable rounds given the conditions. Scholten is now 18th with a 23-over 239 (78-80-81) and Robb is 22nd at 24-over (79-79-82=240).
NU freshmen Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) are a respective 44th and 53rd overall.
Led by White, who holds a three-stroke lead over teammate Lindsay Knowlton, the Buckeyes own a commanding 32-stroke advantage over second-place Michigan. The Wildcats are six strokes back of fourth-place Purdue and 15 in front of sixth-place Iowa.
