Northwestern In the Hunt For An Upper-Half Finish at the Texas A&M Invitational

April 16, 2005

BRYAN, Texas -- Northwestern snapped out of its two-month slump by shooting a 4-over 292 -- the fifth-best second-round team score -- in the Texas A&M Aggie Invitational. The tournament features 10 top-50 teams, including top-ranked Oklahoma State and fifth-ranked New Mexico.

With its 292 in the second round, the Wildcats are tied for ninth place with No. 47 Baylor and No. 31 Kent State. With another strong round on Sunday, the Wildcats could climb several notches as the fifth-place team, No. 17 Texas, is just six strokes ahead of NU. Texas A&M, the host school is in eighth place, one shot in front of NU.

Freshman Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto), who just moved into the Wildcat lineup last weekend, led the NU charge in the second round, firing a career-best 3-under 69. He is tied for eighth place overall with an even-par 144 (75-69). New Mexico's Spencer Lavin (8-under) has a four-stroke lead over Texas' Jeff Bell.

Sophomore Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) is 26th overall at 5-over (73-76=149). Junior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) fired rounds of 78 and 75 and is 48th overall (9-over 153), along with Bryson Young (Reno, Nev./Galena), who had rounds of 81 and 72 for his 9-over 153.

The final round begins Sunday morning. New Mexico and Oklahoma State share the team lead, while No. 29 SMU is two strokes back in third place.
