WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Northwestern was attempting to finish a day of tournament golf in first place for a fourth consecutive time, but the Wildcats' string came to an end as they placed third at the Lady Boilermaker Invitational, held on the campus of Purdue University.
The Wildcats had finished first both days at the Mountain View Collegiate (March 26-27) and were in first place by a stroke after Saturday's two rounds. Michigan and TCU overtook the Wildcats on Sunday and finished in a first-place tie, two shots ahead of Northwestern.
Still, the Wildcats finished ahead of three opponents who were ranked higher than them, so the weekend was productive for NU, which is trying to improve its regional standing in the season's final weeks.
Despite shooting a third-round 8-over 80, senior Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) placed seventh with an 8-over 224 (69-75-80). She was coming off a second-place showing in her previous tournament.
Sophomore Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) finished 11th at 10-over (73-74-79=226) while freshman Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) shot NU's best Sunday round (2-over 74) to finish 13th (75-78-74=227) at 11-over.
Freshman Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) wound up 21st after firing a 3-over 75 on Sunday. She finished with a 14-over 230 (75-80-75). Sophomore Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Middlesex School) also finished with a 75 on Sunday and closed in 38th place (82-78-75=235). Sophomore Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished 47th at 22-over (80-78-80=238).
The Wildcats return to action next weekend at the Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.
