HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. -- Play resumed at the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate on Saturday and Northwestern closed out the rain-shortened event with a 15th-place finish, six shots behind East Tennessee State. The third round, which was scheduled to be played Saturday morning, was canceled after thunderstorms delayed first- and second-round play on Friday.
The Wildcats closed the tourney with rounds of 297 and 300 for a 21-over 597. Duke, ranked 11th this week, came from behind to edge ninth-ranked Wake Forest and 18th-ranked Georgia Southern by a stroke. Georgia Southern's Aron Price turned in a 14-under 130 to win the tourney by six strokes.
Northwestern was paced by sophomore Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) and junior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland), who finished 49th and 58th, respectively. Wilson shot a 4-over 148 (76-72) and Dougherty carded a 6-over 150 (72-78).
Freshmen Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) and Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) were 8-over (76-76=152) and 9-over (73-80=153), respectively, for 65th and 68th place. Sophomore David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) finished at 12-over (82-74=156) for 74th place.
The Wildcats travel to Texas next weekend, taking part in the Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas.
