EVANSTON, Ill. - With NCAA Championships bids on the line at the Regionals over the weekend, a number of Wildcats made strong cases to advance to college fencing's highest stage. Sophomore Courtney DuBois (Chatham, N.J./Oak Knoll) posted the highest Wildcat finish, placing second in epee after going 3-2 in the preliminary pool and 8-3 in the final. She will most likely be selected to NCAA's.
The NCAA Championships are set for March 17-20. An official announcement of who will participate in the Championships comes Tuesday, March 8.
In the foil competition over the weekend, senior Julia Foldi (Budapest, Gengary/Szent Istavan Gimnazium) went 4-1 in the preliminary pool and 7-4 in the final of 12. She placed 4th in the regional and will most likely be selected to the Championships.
Sophomore Jessica Florendo (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Dwight School) Florendo went 4-1 in the preliminary pool and 6-5 in the final of 12. She placed seventh in the regional and will most likely go to NCAA's, as well.
Freshman Natalie Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Preparation) went 2-3 in the preliminary pool and 3-8 in the final to finish 10th. Junior Christina Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Castilleja) went 2-3 in the preliminary pool and 4-7 in the final to finish ninth.
Junior Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) went 4-0 in the preliminary pool and 5-6 in the final. She placed ninth in the final and will be up for an at-large bid.
Senior Kelsey Nencheck (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) went 2-2 in the preliminary pool, 5-6 in the final and placed eighth.
Sophomore Sara Pecherek (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) went 1-3 in the preliminary pool, finishing 13th.
In the sabre competition, senior Lauren Van Gieson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) went 4-0 in the preliminary pool and 6-5 in the final to place fifth. Senior Lauren Dunn (Fair Oaks, Calif./Del Campo) went 4-1 in the preliminary pool and 4-7 in the final. She placed ninth and will be up for an at large bid.
Sophomore Mai Vu (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) went 2-2 in the preliminary pool and 4-7 in the final, placing 10th. She also will be up for an at-large bid.
Sophie Eustis (Andover, Mass/Concord Academy) went 1-3 in the preliminary pool and 5-6 in the final, finishing seventh.
Northwestern finished sixth at the 2004 NCAA Championships.
