BRADENTON, Fla. - Sophomore Ryan Myers was named `Louisville Slugger' National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball and Big Ten Pitcher of the Week for his performance against Cornell Sunday afternoon in Bradenton, Fla. It is Myers' first distinction by both the conference and Collegiate Baseball.
Myers struck out a career-best 15 batters in seven and two-third innings of relief to allow Northwestern to rally for an 8-7 victory over Cornell. The sophomore right-hander entered the game in the second inning with NU trailing 7-0 and runners on second and third with only one out. He ended the inning with two strikeouts and proceeded to strike out the first six batters he faced, holding Cornell to only four hits while walking only one batter to pick up the victory. His 15 punch-outs are the most for a Wildcat hurler since J.A. Happ posted 16 K's against Iowa on May 3, 2003. Myers is the second NU player to pick up Pitcher of the Week accolades as teammate Evan Blesoff was honored on February 15.
Myers has struck out 30 hitters and walked just four in 19.1 innings pitched this season. He has a 2-1 record.
The Wildcats are next in action when they take on Dartmouth, Thursday March 24 at 3 p.m. (EST).
