IOWA CITY, Iowa - Five Wildcat victories in the first session of the Big Ten Championships Saturday afternoon has Northwestern sitting in seventh place with 34.5 points. Illinois leads the way with 56.5 points, followed closely by Minnesota with 55.

NU's Jake Herbert is 2-0 so far, while Matt Delguyd, Ryan Lang and Dustin Fox each are 1-0. All four will compete in the semifinals of their respective weight classes in session two, which kicks off tonight at 6 p.m. Advancing to the semifinals automatically qualifies them for the NCAA Championships.

The second-seeded Herbert earned the `Cats their first victory of the day by smothering Iowa's Luke Lofthouse for a 16-1 technical fall. Herbert was all over Lofthouse early and often -- 15 seconds into the match, he scored his first takedown. Not soon after, Lofthouse's only point came when Herbert was penalized for an illegal hold. But the 2004 Midlands Champion shook off the penalty and went on to record three near falls, finishing the first round with a commanding 11-1 lead.

Then, a mere five seconds into round two, Herbert kept racking up the points with another takedown. Three more points for a near fall brought the one-sided victory to a close, 16-1. It was Herbert's team-leading third technical fall of the year. It was also his second win over Lofthouse this year. Back on Jan.29, he pinned the Hawkeye at 1:05 to ignite a Northwestern 22-19 comeback victory.

In his quarterfinal match, Herbert locked horns with seventh seed Gabriel Dretch of Minnesota in what turned out to be an action-packed bout. Herbert recorded a quick takedown for an initial 2-0 lead. But Dretsch countered with a pair of takedowns to take a 4-2 lead. Herbert tied the score at 4-4 with a reversal, but Dretsch led 5-4 lead after first round thanks to a late escape.

In the second round, Dretsch extended his lead to 7-4 with a reversal, but a flurry of moves by Herbert quickly put him back on top 9-7. Then Herbert added another takedown and three back points to take a 14-7 lead. He closed the match out with a 17-8 major decision.

At 141 lbs., Lang avenged one of his two dual losses this year by upsetting 12th-ranked Cassio Pero of Illinois. Lang, seeded sixth and ranked 13th in the country, earned a close, 3-2 decision over Pero, who was seeded third in the tournament. After a scoreless first round, Lang got on the board early in round two with an escape. He took that 1-0 lead into the final round. There, an escape by Pero knotted things at 1-1. As time ticked away though, Lang scored a takedown with less than 30 seconds to go, jumping ahead 3-1. He would yield another escape to Pero, but held on for the overall 3-2 win. Pero had defeated Lang 11-4 back on Feb. 17.

In his first bout of the day, Matt Delguyd faced Adam Fellers of Iowa. Fellers came into the match with some momentum after upsetting sixth seed Willie Breyer of Michigan earlier in the day. Scoreless through the first round, Delguyd scored an escape and then a quick takedown in a 20-second span -- riling an already rowdy Carver-Hawkeye Arena crowd. Fellers regained the crowd by fighting back with a pair of escapes and cutting Delguyd's lead to 3-2. Then in the third round, Delguyd was slapped with a stalling penalty, tying the match at 3-3. Still tied with less than 10 seconds to go, the Carver-Hawkeye crowd once again rose to back Fellers. But Delguyd silenced the arena by recording a dramatic takedown with four seconds to spare. It was Delguyd's team-leading 26th victory of the year.

Heavyweight Dustin Fox -- seeded fourth -- battled fifth seed Matt Fields from Iowa at the same time as Delguyd's match. Fox got up early with an escape, then scored a takedown at the 1:05 mark in the second round to take a 3-0 lead. Fields posted two escapes to pull within one, 3-2, with one minute remaining. But Fox staved off Fields -- and a deafening crowd -- for his second victory of the year over Fields.

Fox will face the top-seeded Cole Konrad of Minnesota in the semifinals tonight. Konrad has torn through his first two matches of the Championships, recording "Ohhhh"-inspiring pins from the crowd in the first minute of each. Konrad's vicious body-slam of Penn State's Edwards could be heard from the back of the arena.

Session two kicks off this evening at 6 p.m. Six 'Cats are set to compete in the wrestleback round, while the aforementioned four are in the semifinals.
