IOWA CITY, Iowa - Jake Herbert and Matt Delguyd each recorded semifinal wins in session two Saturday evening at the Big Ten Championships, and both will now battle for an individual championship tomorrow in session three, set to begin at noon. As a team, Northwestern has compiled 56.5 points and is currently tied for eighth place with Penn State. Illinois remains atop the leader board with 114.5 points.

Herbert will face a familiar foe -- top-seeded Pete Friedl of Illinois -- in the 174 lb. title bout. Delguyd will take on top-seeded JD Bergman of Ohio State. Both are aiming to become NU's first Big Ten Champion since Mark Bybee in 2000.

Dustin Fox and Ryan Lang fell in their semifinal matches, but each will have a shot at third place if they win their first match tomorrow.

John Velez also is still alive in the Championships. After falling to second seed Bobby Lowe of Minnesota in session one, Velez got back on track in the consolation bracket with wins over Nathan Costello of Ohio State and Colin Cudd of Wisconsin. His two victories automatically qualify him for the NCAA Championships. He's far from done in Iowa City though -- if he wins his first match in session three tomorrow, he will also have a shot at third place.

Velez and the rest of the 125-pounders started session two in the wrestleback rounds.

Velez wasted little time establishing himself against the Buckeyes' Costello, recording a pair of takedowns in first round. He tacked on another point at the beginning of round two with an escape and scored another takedown late in that same round. Taking a 7-0 lead into the third round, Velez closed out the decision by the same score.

In his next match against Wisconsin's Cudd, Velez used a similar formula for victory. Cudd came in with a head of steam after upsetting eighth seed Charlie Falck in his first wrestleback match. Nevertheless, Velez continued his march through the consolation bracket with a 8-1 decision.

Velez scored first with a takedown in the closing seconds of round one. An escape in round two followed by another takedown stretched his lead to 5-0. Cudd went into the down position at the start of round three, and Velez squashed any chance he had by riding the Badger for two minutes and thirty seconds. At the half-minute mark, Cudd finally earned an escape point, but it was too late. Velez put an exclamation point on the match with a takedown as time expired. With a bonus point for riding time, he recorded a 8-1 decision.

He will face third seed Joe Dubuque of Indiana in session three tomorrow. The winner of that match will advance to the third-place bout.

In Herbert's semifinal match against Michigan State's RJ Boudro, he finished the first round with a 2-1 lead after scoring a takedown and yielding an escape. Herbert got out to a 3-1 lead with an escape to begin the second round, but Boudro knotted the score at 3-3 with a takedown of his own. After Herbert scored two more points to take a 5-3 lead, Boudro countered with an escape to get to within 5-4 -- possibly sniffing an upset. But Herbert quickly pounced back on the Spartan and nailed him to the mat to take a 7-4 lead into the final round. There, Herbert closed out the decision, 8-5.

Next up for Herbert is the Illini's Friedl in the title bout. The two are an even 1-1 against each other this year (Herbert won at the Midlands Championships, while Friedl exacted revenge in their dual match).

At 197 lbs., Delguyd avenged his dual match loss to Purdue's Nathan Moore with a 4-3 decision. The two were scoreless through the first round. Then Delguyd notched an escape to start the second round, before Moore took a 2-1 lead off a takedown. Delguyd tied it back up at 2-2, but Moore took the lead back off an escape. Delguyd saved his best for the closing seconds though, recording a takedown with 37 seconds left for a 4-3 win.

Delguyd will face the Buckeye's Bergman in the title bout. It will be the two's first meeing this season.

Lang will battle Alex Tsirtsis of Iowa in his first match tomorrow. He earned a 10-4 decision over Tsirtsis in dual competition earlier this year.

Fox matches up against the Illini's Mike Behnke in his first match tomorrow. Behnke defeated Fox, 5-3, in dual competition earlier this year.
