MINNEAPOLIS -- Northwestern won three of the five Friday afternoon swimming preliminaries at the 2005 Big Ten Championships with Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) and Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) all winning respective events.
Bubolz shattered the Big Ten's 100 butterfly record with a time of 46.49, which automatically qualifies him for the NCAA Championships in that event. Bubolz finished 0.56 seconds ahead of Michigan's Davis Tarwater. It was also the second-fastest 100 fly time in college swimming this year.
Grevers captured the 100 backstroke with a time of 46.73. He already owns the Big Ten record in this event -- a time of 45.98. Alexandrov won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 53.56.
The finals for these three events, as well as the 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 800 freestyle relay and 3-meter diving begin at 7 p.m.
