EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern has had a few stand-out individual performances so far at the United States Fencing Association (USFA) National Junior Olympics in Arlington, Texas this weekend.
On Saturday in the under-20 sabre competition, sophomore Mai Vu (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) finished 11th out of 118 entries despite being stabbed in the hand.
"She managed to finish the day and tough it out, which was very impressive after what she went through," Head Coach Laurie Schiller said.
Sophomore Sophie Eustis (Andover, Mass./Concord Academy) finished 29th in the saber. And, recently back in action after suffering some flu-like symptoms, freshman Gina Annunziato (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) took 34th.
In the under-20 epee division on Friday, sophomore Sara Pecherek (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) finished 99 out of 159 entries.
Sophomore Jessica Florendo (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Dwight School) claimed sixth place in the junior women's foil, while freshman Natalie Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Presentation) took 33rd.
