EVANSTON, Ill. - 40th-ranked Northwestern fell to sixth-ranked Mississippi Tuesday night, 6-1.
Senior Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and junior Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) beat Ole Miss' Freddie Aarum and Irling Tveit 9-8 (14-12) in a tie-breaker that capped an 80-minute doubles session. With the win, the Wildcat duo improved their record to 6-2 on the season.
After the dramatic doubles matches, the Wildcats continued to hang with the Rebels in individual play. In a battle at No. 1 singles, Hanus and Mississippi's Catalin Gard -- the top-ranked singles player in the country -- put on a two-hour, 20-minute show on center court of the Combe Tennis Center.
After losing the first set 6-4, Hanus rallied in the second to win a tie-break. The third set was back and forth, until Hanus was unable to break Catalin's serve after falling behind 6-5.
The only Wildcat point of the night came from sophomore Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) at No. 3 singles. He beat the Rebels' Bram ten Berge in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 6-3).
Lock has slowly moved his way up the Wildcat lineup. He started the dual season by winning three matches at No. 5, before winning three more at No. 4. Tuesday's match against the Rebels was Lock's first appearance at No. 3 this season and with the win, improved to 7-1 in duals.
Northwestern (5-3, 1-0 Big Ten) is next in action Friday, Feb. 18 at Notre Dame.
