14th-ranked Penn State defeated 17th-ranked Northwestern Saturday in Welsh-Ryan Arena by a score of 24-13. The Nittany Lions had trailed 13-3 at the mid-way point of the match, but won the remaining five matches to claim their third conference victory.
Northwestern drops to 9-4 and 2-4 in the Big Ten.
The Wildcats got off to a good start thanks to freshman Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny). Herbert kicked things off at 174 lbs. with a 13-2 major decision win over Jame Yonushonis. The freshman phenom remains undefeated on the year, moving to 22-0.
After a loss at 184 lbs., junior Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) put some wind back in the Wildcats' sail with a huge victory over 13th-ranked Phil Davis at 197 lbs.
Delguyd scored a takedown in the first round, taking a 2-0 lead into the second frame. The Mayfield, Ohio native did not ease off the gas pedal from there, recording two more takedowns and an escape for the overall 7-3 victory. Delguyd remains the NU's leader in wins with a 24-5 mark.
Freshman Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) recorded a victory at heavyweight to increase Northwestern's lead to 10-3. Junior John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) then gave the 'Cats a 10 point lead with a 5-2 decision at 125 lbs.
But Penn State answered by sweeping the remaining five matches, going on to win 24-13.
Northwestern is next in action Thursday, Feb. 17 at third-ranked Illinois.
