EVANSTON, Ill. - Freshman Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) has earned Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors following his efforts in Northwestern's 22-19 win over Iowa last Saturday, Jan. 29.
Tamillow provided one of many memorable individual Wildcat performances in Northwestern's epic comeback from a 19-3 deficit. With the 'Cats trailing 19-9, the Oak Park, Ill. native matched up against fifth-ranked Paul Bradley at 184 lbs. Down 3-2 in the closing seconds, the freshman scored a single point with an escape to knot the score. He then slammed Bradley -- a 2004 all-American -- to the mat just as the buzzer sounded for two points and a 5-3 win.
The 'Cats followed with three more individual victories to beat the Hawkeyes for the first time in 37 years.
The win also was Tamillow's 20th of the year, as he improved to 7-2 in dual competition and 2-1 in the Big Ten.
This is the first time Tamillow has earned the conference honor and it marks the second time a Wildcat has nabbed the honor this season. Freshman Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) got the nod Jan. 5 after winning the Midlands Championship at 174 lbs.
Tamillow has also been named TheMat.com's Wrestler of the Week for the week of Jan. 25-Jan. 31.
