Jan. 5, 2005

EVANSTON, Ill. - Redshirt Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) earned Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors following his first-place finish at the 42nd Midlands Championships.

He captured the title at 174 lbs. last week by defeating No. 5 seed Mitch Hancock of Central Michigan, 11-6. The championship victory is the first by an NU undergraduate since Andre Allen won the 142-lb. title in 1974.

The victory over Hancock was the third-consecutive upset for the seventh-seeded Herbert. He dropped No. 2 Pete Friedl of Illinois in the quarterfinal, 5-2, before defeating No. 6 Nick Passolano of Iowa State in the semifinals by the same score. Herbert's 4-0 performance at the Midlands improved his overall season record to a flawless 7-0.

This is Herbert's first career Wrestler of the Week selection.

Herbert and the Wildcats are next in action this Saturday, Jan. 8 at Ohio State's Buckeye Duals.
