EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern travels to the University of Wisconsin this weekend to take part in the Big Ten Singles Championship Friday, Nov. 12 through Monday, Nov. 15. The tournament is the final fall competition for the Wildcats.
Senior Justin Hoeveler (Ross, Calif./The Branson School) and sophomore Jamie Friedland (Glen Cove, N.Y./St. Stephen's) will start competition Friday in the qualifying rounds. If they win two matches, they will be part of the eight qualifiers who advance to the main draw of 64.
Hoeveler is scheduled to face Brown of Michigan State, while Friedland will take on Cariello of Michigan. Both matches start at 9 a.m.
The remaining `Cats are set to start the championships in the main draw on Saturday. Senior Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) has grabbed the eighth seed of the championships and will face Robinson of Purdue at 11:30 a.m. Sophomore Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) plays Malempati of Iowa at 9 a.m. Sophomore Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) and junior Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) will face a qualifier to be determined at 9 a.m. as well.
Senior Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) will face Fischer of Michigan at Noon on Saturday.
There will be three distinctive winners by the end of the weekend -- the overall champion, the first round consolation champion and the second round consolation champion.
