COLUMBUS, Ohio - Northwestern's three-match Big Ten winning streak came to an abrupt halt Friday night, as the No. 19 Ohio State Buckeyes scored in the sixth minute of overtime to earn a come-from-behind, 2-1 win over the Wildcats.
The win pushed Ohio State to 7-2-3 (3-0-3 Big Ten), while the 'Cats fall to 7-5-1 (3-3-0 Big Ten).
"It was a disappointing loss," said NU head coach Jenny Haigh. "We did not bring our best effort today, and Ohio State is a good team and they took advantage of that."
NU drew first blood in the match when freshman Kelsey Hans scored amid a scramble in front of the OSU goal. Shannon Schneeman was credited with an assist.
However, on a night when the Buckeyes outshot the 'Cats 19-10, it seemed only a matter of time before they would get the equalizer. And it came in the 63rd minute when Lisa Grubb -- the 2001 Big Ten Freshman of the Year who missed most of last season to injury -- rebounded a Danielle Dietrich shot and scored from six yards out.
NU goalkeeper Whitney Jones did her part to keep the match level, coming up with eight of her career-high 11 saves in the second stanza.
"Whitney had a great game, she really kept us in it for awhile," said Haigh. "We were not as threatening as we would have liked offensively, but she did what she could to keep us in it."
Unfortunately, Jones' heroics only stretched through 90 minutes on this day. With 5:08 gone in the first extra session, Grubb ended the match with her second goal of the night, heading home a cross from Lara Dickenmann from 10 yards out.
Haigh cited Tabitha Lowey, Kelly Sitkowski and Tori Bohannon for their play Friday.
The Wildcats complete this daunting Big Ten road trip Sunday with a match at No. 3 Penn State. Kickoff is slated for noon (11 a.m. Central) in University Park.
