LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Led by a trio of golfers who stand 21st or better, Northwestern's men's golf team is tied for fourth place with eighth-ranked Kent State at the Wildcats' Ninth Windon Memorial Classic, being held at Conway Farms Golf Club.
Monday's second round was suspended due to darkness and will resume on Tuesday, with the third and final round to follow immediately. Most teams fell two or three holes shy of completing the second round.
Through the first 18 holes, the Wildcats were in a position to challenge for the lead, just seven strokes back of seventh-ranked LSU (287). Duke was in second place (291) and Minnesota (293) was third. The Wildcats and Golden Flashes both has 10-over 294's for the first 18.
Individually, sophomore Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) was leading the 'Cats, firing a 1-over 72 for the first 18 holes. He is in 10th place. Senior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) fired a 2-over 73 and is in a five-way tie for 16th place.
Sophomore David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) is one of eight golfers who charted 3-over 74's.
Leading the tournament is Minnesota's Bronson LaCassie, who is 2-under (69).
The defending NCAA national champion California Golden Bears were in last place (18th) after the first 18 holes. Peter Richardson of Purdue, last year's individual champion, was a stroke off the lead.
