BANDON, Ore. -- The inaugural Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge is in the books.
Despite the rainy weather on Monday, which forced the cancellation of one of the three rounds, the event featuring 14 top Big Ten and Pac-10 schools, produced exciting team and individual finishes.
Northwestern placed fifth among the 14 schools -- second among the seven Big Ten schools. Minnesota and USC finished tied atop the team standings, but the Gophers won the team title because of tie-breaker criteria. The predetermined tie-breaker was the non-counting or fifth-man score, and the Gophers won that battle by two strokes.
Individually, Arizona State's Alejandro Canizares won the individual title by shooting a 2-under 142. The 2003 NCAA individual medalist posted consecutive rounds of 71. Tuesday, Canizares had six birdies, a bogey and two double bogeys.
The Wildcats were paced by sophomore Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman), who turned in a career-best performance. He fired an even-par 72 on Tuesday to finish in seventh place at 2-over (74-72=146).
Junior Bryson Young (Reno, Nevada/Galena), who led the field by a stroke on Monday, shot an 11-over 83 and finished 9-over (70-83=153) in 28th place.
Senior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) placed 14th after carding a 2-over 74. He finished 6-over (76-74=150) for the tournament.
Northwestern's David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) and Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) placed 41st and 65th, respectively.
In the conference challenge, the Pac-10 won the inaugural event with a combined score of plus-162 to the Big Ten's plus-191. Each conference counted its low six scores of each round to determine the challenge winner.
The 2005 Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge will be held at the Glen Club in Glenview, Ill., and hosted by Northwestern. The 2006 event will return to Bandon and will be played on the Pacific Dunes course.
