NU Sophomore Competes at World Short Course Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Northwestern sophomore and 2004 Olympian Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) competed in five events at the World Short Course Championships over the weekend at the Conseco Fieldhouse.

The Bulgarian citizen and Champaign, Ill., native reached the finals in four of his five events, finishing seventh in the 50 breast and 400 IM; sixth in the 100 IM and fifth in the 100 breast.

He also swam in the 200 free, placing 13th.

At the Athens Olympics in August, Alexandrov competed in three events for Bulgaria, with his best finish coming in the 200 IM (18th).

The Short Course Championships are swum on a 25 meter course as opposed to the 50 meter course used during the Olympics.

The meet lasted five days and featured several new World Records. Nearly 50,000 attended the meet, which was also televised daily on ESPN2.
