EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern men's golf team begins its fall season Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10-11 at the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational. The 54-hole tournament is being hosted by the University of Toledo at the famed Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
In the 2003 Inverness Intercollegiate, senior Dillon Dougherty finished just six strokes off the lead in a tie for fourth place. His season scoring average of 73.97 was second on the team. Sophomore David Merkow returns after a rookie season in which he averaged 75.78.
The competition at this year's Inverness Intercollegiate consists of 13 teams, including Big Ten foes Illinois and Michigan State. Kentucky, which finished eighth in last season's NCAA Championships, and Kansas State, runner-up at the 2003 Inverness Intercollegiate, highlight a strong field.
The Inverness Club is a par-71, 7,255-yard Donald Ross-designed course. Founded in 1903, the club has played host to four U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships, one U.S. Amateur and most recently the 2003 U.S. Senior Open.
A practice round will be played Thursday. Tournament play begins Friday with an 8:30 a.m. (7:30 CDT) shotgun start. Thirty-six holes will be played Friday with the final round on Saturday.
