ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Northwestern opened its 2004-05 season Saturday with a lineup consisting of two freshmen, three sophomores and one senior at the Lady Northern Invitational being held at the University of Michigan. After two rounds, the youthful 'Cats are among the leaders, sitting in sixth place in the 15-team event.
Each fall, the Lady Northern is held at the site of the ensuing Big Ten Championships. All 11 Big Ten teams are participating this weekend, and NU is fifth among the Big Ten schools.
Sophomore Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood), last year's Big Ten Freshman of the Year, is in 17th place. She fired rounds of 77 and 73 on Saturday and is 6-over.
Newcomer Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) is in 19th place after posting rounds of 78 and 73 (7-over 151) in her collegiate debut. NU's other freshman in the lineup, Katie Trachock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), is 38th after shooting an 11-over 155 (77-78).
Senior Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) posted a 73 and 79 for an 8-over 152. She is sitting 23rd. Sophomore Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Middlesex School) is 32nd (75-79=154).
The third and final round will be played Sunday.
