EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University today announced its 2004-05 men's basketball schedule. The Wildcats will play 29 regular-season games, including 16 at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Several highlights are once again included on the schedule, beginning with the very first weekend of the season when the Wildcats travel to Fairbanks, Alaska to participate in the eight-team BP Top of the World Classic from Nov. 19-21. NU will open with the University of Portland on Friday night, with second-round games on Saturday and final games on Sunday. In addition to the Pilots, the Top of the World Classic will feature a pair of 2004 NCAA Tournament teams in Western Michigan and Central Florida, as well as 2004 NIT participant Utah State, New Mexico State, Georgia Southern and host Alaska-Fairbanks.
Northwestern will play two road games against teams from major conferences this season, facing Colorado--an NIT team a year ago--on Sunday, Nov. 28 and Arizona State on Monday, Dec. 20.
The home schedule begins Wednesday, Dec. 1 when Virginia comes to town as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. That game will begin at 8:30 p.m. and be broadcast live on ESPN2, one of two times the Wildcats will play to a national audience (the other comes Saturday, Jan. 22 at Penn State).
The Wildcats also will host a pair of Chicagoland teams at Welsh-Ryan Arena this year, as Chicago State rolls in Saturday, Dec. 4 and DePaul comes to Evanston on Wednesday, Dec. 15. Following the game with the Blue Demons, Northwestern will host Seton Hall on Saturday, Dec. 18. The Pirates, like DePaul, advanced to the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament.
Northwestern opens conference play Wednesday, Jan. 5 at home against Indiana. Following that, the Wildcats are on the road at Michigan State and then Michigan. During the course of the Big Ten season, the 'Cats will play two straight home games twice and two straight road games twice.
The Big Ten Tournament returns to Chicago this year, taking place at the United Center from March 10-13.
The Wildcats play the following Big Ten teams once this season--Ohio State (Saturday, Jan. 29) and Purdue (Saturday, Feb. 5) will come to Welsh-Ryan Arena, while NU will travel to Wisconsin (Wednesday, Feb. 2) and Minnesota (Wednesday, Feb. 9).
