EVANSTON, Ill. -- Fresh off a victory in its own North Shore Classic last weekend, Northwestern will host the Lakeside Classic Fri.-Sun., Sept. 10-12, at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex.
The Wildcats welcome UC Irvine, DePaul and UW-Green Bay to Evanston for their second home tournament in as many weekends. DePaul will take on UC Irvine at Noon Friday with NU meeting the Phoenix at 4 p.m. UW-Green Bay faces UC Irvine at 2 p.m. Sunday followed by Northwestern and DePaul at 4 p.m.
"UW-Green Bay is off to a great start this year and will be a tough opponent for us," NU coach Tim Lenahan said. "DePaul provides a great Chicago rivalry for us. We had a great game with them last year and I expect the same."
The DePaul match also holds a personal meaning for NU sophomore Daniel Chille (Lake Zurich, Ill./Stevenson), whose brother Julian plays for the Blue Demons.
The Phoenix are 2-0 on the season after defeating Lipscomb and Niagara in their Green Bay Soccer Classic last weekend. DePaul is 1-1-1, defeating Loyola 2-0 and taking No. 17 South Florida into overtime before falling, 1-0.
"We need to continue to do the things we have done including being organized and disciplined defensively while still getting forward on the attack." Lenahan said.
Northwestern fell to Butler, 1-0, and defeated College of Charleston, 4-0, to capture the North Shore Classic last weekend. Sophomore Gerardo Alvarez (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) leads the team with three goals and an assist.
Junior Brian Heckenbach (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) and sophomore Justin Pines (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) have combined on two shutouts in both of NU's wins.
