Sept. 6, 2004

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern University quarterback Brett Basanez (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) was named the Big Ten Conference's Offensive Player of the Week Monday after turning in the top passing performance in school history last Thursday against TCU.

Basanez completed 39-of-62 passes for a school-record 513 yards and a career-best four touchdowns. He also totaled 35 rushing yards, giving him 548 yards of total offense -- an NU best and the second-best total in Big Ten history. His 39 completions and 62 attempts were both the second-most in Wildcat annals.

Basanez's 513 passing yards rank fifth-best on the Big Ten's single-game performance chart. He also equaled an NU mark with three touchdown passes in one half.

His final touchdown pass was an 8-yard strike to Shaun Herbert (Oxon Hill, Md./Bishop McNamara) with nine seconds remaining that tied the game at 45-45.
