Johnson Sits in 19th Place at NCAA Central Regional

May 21, 2004

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Northwestern senior Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) shot a 4-over 76 on Friday and fell eight strokes behind the NCAA Central Regional's individual leader, Brandon Waldrop of Kentucky (4-under 140).

Johnson, who will play the final 18 holes of the tournament on Saturday, is still in contention, however, for one of the two NCAA national championship individual at-large berths. The top individual who is not associated with a team presently sitting in the top 10 is Indiana's Heath Peters, who is four strokes ahead of Johnson.

Johnson's second round began with four bogeys on his first seven holes. He then recovered, and played even par the remainder of the round. Johnson (72-76=148) is tied for 19th place overall.

Kentucky holds a narrow two-stroke lead over Oklahoma State in the race for the team championship.
