COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Led by freshman Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Middlesex School), Northwestern rebounded from a slow start on Friday to finish the first two rounds of the 2004 Big Ten Championships in sixth place. The Wildcats, who posted the third-best team score for the second round, were in ninth place following the first 18 holes.
Third-ranked Ohio State, which is hosting this year's event on its home course, is in first place, five strokes ahead of 32nd-ranked Indiana. The 37th-ranked Wildcats are 18 strokes behind the Buckeyes, but just seven strokes back of third-place Wisconsin.
Robb, who posted four top-15 finishes in her first four collegiate events, is sitting 4-over (75-73=148), three strokes behind Ohio State's Allison Hanna (+1). NU's other top freshman, Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood), did not have a good day, shooting a 21-over 165 (83-82). Kim, who shot 75 or lower in 12 of her previous 17 rounds, is in 53rd place.
Junior Mary Ellen Grzebien (Saunderstown, R.I./Narragansett) is having her best tournament of the spring, shooting rounds of 76 and 78 on Friday -- good enough for 16th place (10-over 154). Junior Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) shot one of the best second rounds of the tourney with a 2-over 72. She is also tied for 16th place with Grzebien at 10-over (80-74=154).
The third round begins at 9 a.m. ET Saturday.
