Courtnay Foster Named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week

April 19, 2004

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore hurler Courtnay Foster (Tuscon, Ariz./Sahuaro) has been named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, her second such honor of the season and fifth Big Ten POW award of her career.

Foster racked up three wins and a save during Northwestern's 5-0 week, the highlight coming Saturday in a 2-0, two-hit shutout of Penn State. She struck out 14 batters in the game -- her season-high for a seven-inning contest -- and earned her fifth shutout of the season.

Foster pitched one and a third innings in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader against Ohio State to garner the save, then picked up the win in the second game. She opened the week Tuesday by earning the victory in a 6-3 win over Loyola.

For the week, Foster struck out 29 batters in 21.1 innings of work while allowing only a single earned run. She is currently averaging 9.13 strikeouts per seven innings of work.

Northwestern (24-13, 7-5 Big Ten) returns to action tomorrow with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Notre Dame at Sharon J. Drysdale Field.
