Northwestern Names Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week

April 12, 2004

EVANSTON, Ill -- Northwestern has named men's golfer Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) and softball's Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week. The honor is the first of the season for both student-athletes.

Canney, a freshman, tossed a pair of shutouts in NU's Big Ten wins over Wisconsin and Minnesota this weekend. She struck out a season-high 10 batters in each outing, allowing only nine total hits on the weekend.

She has now allowed only a single run over her last 21 innings pitched, winning her last four decisions. Canney's record stands at 11-2, with seven of her 11 wins coming by way of shutout.

For the fourth time this year, senior Tom Johnson posted a top-five finish, placing third at the Boilermaker Invitational-a tournament that featured nine teams ranked in the nation's top 50. Johnson fired back-to-back 69s on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead into the final 18 holes. He finished with a 2-over 74 on Sunday and a 4-under 212 for the tournament-good enough for third place.
