BERKELEY, Calif. - The Northwestern women's lacrosse team used a familiar recipe Sunday afternoon to earn a 16-4 win over California and spoil the Bears' Senior Day festivities.
Northwestern (9-1) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and never looked back en route to its eighth straight win. In the game, nine different players scored for the Wildcats. At the other end, a stingy defensive effort was defined by goalkeeper Ashley Gersuk, who had 12 saves.
The effort was similar to Friday night's win at Stanford, when six NU players scored and Gersuk made 14 stops.
"This was a great win for us," said NU head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. "We really took it to them offensively, right from the start, and we had another great defensive game. We have played very well at both ends for three straight games now, which is good because we are heading back into conference play soon."
NU held the Bears (6-7) scoreless until the 16th minute, took a 7-2 lead into halftime and wasted no time again in the second half, putting up another five goals before allowing a California goal 14 minutes into the period.
Laura Glassanos led the NU attack, scoring four goals and adding an assist. Freshman Aly Josephs added three goals and an assist, while Kim Corcoran and Sarah Albrecht had two goals each.
Northwestern will be back in action Saturday, traveling to Penn State to take on the Nittany Lions in a critical American Lacrosse Conference game at noon Eastern (11 a.m. Central). The game will be the Wildcats' last road game of the regular season -- following that contest, they are home five times to end the season.
