Northwestern Names Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week

April 5, 2004

EVANSTON, Ill.--Northwestern has named J.A. Happ (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) and Kristen Kjellman (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.

Happ dominated Indiana in Northwestern's 2-0 Big Ten opener Friday. The junior pitched his first collegiate complete-game shutout, facing just two batters over the minimum in a nine-inning contest (29). He did not allow a Hoosier runner to reach second base the entire game, striking out a season-high 12.

Happ, who got 10 ground-ball outs in the game, lowered his ERA to a minute 1.99 in 45.1 innings pitched. He has struck out 56 batters this season, 12 of them looking.

Kjellman led a balanced Northwestern attack in its 18-4 women's lacrosse win over Connecticut Sunday afternoon. The freshman scored a career-high eight goals, including six in the decisive first half, to propel the 15th-ranked Wildcats to the win.

Kjellman--who scored the first three goals in Sunday's win--has 14 goals in the last two games and a team-best 25 overall.
