NU Crushes Coastal Carolina 7-0

March 27, 2004

CONWAY, S.C.--Forget the lamb.

Northwestern's 33rd-ranked men's tennis team concluded its nonconference schedule with a roar, ending the month of March like a lion in blanking Coastal Carolina 7-0.

The win improved the Wildcats' record to 11-4, better than their 8-7 mark a year ago at this time. Meanwhile, the Chanticleers fell to 1-15.

"With this match out of the way," said head coach Paul Torricelli, "we are ready for the home stretch and resuming Big Ten play."

Despite not having a match since March 5, NU had no trouble in sweeping doubles for the first point. Ahmed Wahla (Lahore, Pakistan/Lahore American School) and Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) helped prove this with their 8-0 rout of Ryan Vrba and Brian Dowis at No. 3.

Both Wahla and Lock won their singles matches as well; the former was a 6-3, 6-1 winner against Andy Caress at No. 5, while the latter chiseled out a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Simon Taylor at No. 3.

At No. 1, Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) defeated Richard Redding 6-2, 6-4, which followed Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbr?gge) and his 6-1, 6-0 pounding of Florentin Mexnie at No. 2.

In the remaining matches, Jamie Friedland (Glen Cove, N.Y./St. Stephen's) edged Vrba 7-5, 6-4 at No. 6, and Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) downed Dowis 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4.

For their next competition, the Wildcats will go head-to-head with Purdue at noon on April 3 at Vandy Christie Tennis Center, weather permitting.
