BRADENTON, Fla. - Northwestern dropped its second straight game to Dartmouth, 13-10, Friday afternoon at Academy Park #2 in Bradenton, Fla. The Big Green scored seven runs in the third inning and three more in the sixth to put the game away. NU scored four runs in the last three innings, but came up short, falling to 8-9-1 on the season.
Senior Jason Krynski was the offensive catalyst for NU, hitting two home runs and driving in five in the contest. He ended the game 3-for-6 with two runs scored. Krynski is hitting .367 on the season with 10 doubles and three home runs, while driving in 18.
In the game, Northwestern jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Krynski hit his second home run of the season over the left centerfield wall fence. Josh Lieberman led off with a 10-pitch single off the third baseman's glove, setting the table for Krynski.
Dartmouth answered with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning, which included a two-run home run.
The Big Green chased Wildcat starter Dan Konecny in the third inning, scoring seven runs on five hits. Konecny left the game with runners on second and third base, as reliever Julio Siberio got two fly ball outs to end the inning.
NU started to comeback in the top of the fifth inning, plating four runs on five hits. Krynski tattooed his second home run of the game, blasting a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall. Along with Krynski's three-run home run, Matt Brimmer had an RBI single that scored Caleb Fields from third. Fields led off with a push-bunt single to second base.
Siberio cruised through his first two and two-third innings of work before finding some trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning. Dartmouth scored three runs on three hits, to take a 13-6 lead after six complete innings. Siberio threw three and two-third innings.
NU tallied a run in the top of the seventh inning as Jon Mikrut's lead off double came around to score. Pinch hitter Mike Phelps hit a single to right, scoring Mikrut from third. First baseman Mark Ori moved Mikrut to third with a single to right field.
Northwestern scored another single run it the eighth, as a Lieberman lead off walk came around to score. Dan Pohlman's groundout to the pitcher scored Lieberman after a Krynski single moved Lieberman to third.
In the ninth, NU mounted a potential game-tying rally, leaving runners on first and third after scoring two runs in the ninth. With the bases loaded and one out, Lieberman hit a rocket off the pitcher's throwing hand, nearly getting Mark Ori out at the plate. Everyone was safe, bringing up Brimmer. Brimmer hit a fielder's choice to the shortstop, forcing Lieberman out at second base for the second out. Krynski just missed tying the game with his third home run, flying out on the warning track to end the game.
NU and Dartmouth play the third of their three-game series tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. The game will be played at Academy Park #2 in Bradenton, Fla. It is Northwestern's final game of the nonconference season.
