NOTRE DAME, Ind.--Northwestern's sixth-ranked women's fencing team matched its performance at the 2003 Midwest Conference Championships with another third-place finish this year.
"I was hoping we could have taken first or second, but Ohio State (which won) fenced really well," said head coach Laurie Schiller. "It was not as if we fenced poorly; we just could not get it done today."
NU's epee squad took second, improving upon its third-place performance from a year ago. Both the foil and sabre squads took third.
No results were made available by Notre Dame, the host school.
Individual competition will take place on Sunday.
