EVANSTON, Ill. - Twenty years ago, Northwestern volleyball took home the Big Ten Title after beating the heavily-favored Purdue Boilermakers. On Saturday night in front of the reunited 1983 team, the Wildcats showed some resilience of their own by defeating No. 20 Minnesota in three--30-25, 30-24, 30-24.
Northwestern's (16-10, 7-7 Big Ten) sweep was not expected by head coach Keylor Chan, recalling Minnesota's sweep of the Wildcats back in October, but the win was.
"We expected to play this way," said Chan. "We didn't expect to sweep Minnesota, but we'll take it. With the '83 team here, we played with some inspiration; we wanted to play well for them."
The 'Cats relied on balanced play in the match, with three players totaling 10 or more kills and two hitting over .325. Northwestern held Minnesota to a .104 attack percent overall and just 29 assists, compared to their own .233 attack percent and 49 assists.
"Northwestern played a good match," said Minnesota head coach Mike Hebert. "They were very prepared and caused us all sorts of problems. Hats off to Northwestern. They made very few errors."
Senior middle blocker Erika Lange (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) came up big for the 'Cats in game one, hitting four of seven with two block assists to lead the team. Iwona Lodzik (Tarnobrzeg, Poland, Tarnobrzeg) served for six points in the game, including three service aces and the final two points, for the win.
Freshman Lauren Greenwood (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) was key in games two and three for the Wildcats, brought in to the rotation to serve. Greenwood served for four points in the middle game and five in the third, and gave NU the lead in the final game after being down by three early.
"The team is coming together," said Greenwood. "The rotation is a good one for us. Playing focused was the key tonight."
Leah Delcourt (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) was 2-3 (.667) and Jill Buschur (New Bremen, Ohio/New Bremen) was 5-8 (.500) in the second. No Minnesota player with more than two attempts was above .200 in the game.
Though NU had to come back from four-point deficits in the final game, they rallied and sent the Golden Gophers home winless this weekend.
Overall, Lange was .350 and Buschur followed at .333. Drew Robertson (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) had 42 assists and a team-leading 11 digs in the match for Northwestern's first victory over a ranked opponent this season.
The 'Cats will put their three-match winning streak on the line this Wednesday as they travel to Illinois. Game time is set for 7 p.m. CST.
