Regional Fencers Come to Town

Nov. 19, 2003

EVANSTON, Ill. -- After a long weekend of fencing in the NU Duals, the Wildcats are right back on the saddle as they play host to the Illinois Junior Olympics Qualifier Nov. 23 at Patten Gymnasium.

The event, which is a non-team tournament, is a qualifier for the 2004 Junior Olympics. The competitors will be divided into men's and women's under-17 and under-20 age groups.

NU fencers Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier), Christina Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Castilleja), Mai Vu (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) and Jessica Florendo (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Dwight School) have earned automatic bids based on their point standings in the U.S. Fencing Association (USFA).

"I anticipate several more members of our team will be able to qualify," said head coach Laurie Schiller, noting that the only Wildcats competing Sunday will be those not listed above and that are under 20 years of age.

The Qualifier will be the last event for the Wildcats until Jan. 10, when they travel to San Jose, Calif. for the USFA North American Cup.

Schedule of Competition for NU:

U20 Epee -- 9:15 a.m.
U20 Foil -- 12:30 p.m.
