EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern has named its Hilton Garden Inn athletes of the week. Freshman soccer player Gerardo Alvarez is the men's selection, while junior swimmer Christy Olin is the women's AOW.
Alvarez, who was named Co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year Thursday night, scored the game-winning goal in the Wildcats' 2-1 win over second-seeded Michigan in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.
Alvarez, who scored the most points in a season by any NU freshman in history (25), was also named second-team all-Big Ten as well as to the Big Ten All-Freshman team.
Olin, meanwhile, broke the Wisconsin pool record in the 200-yard butterfly with a personal-best time of 2:01.26. She claimed first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 fly against Minnesota with times of 57.00 and 2:01.49, respectively. She has six first-place finishes this season in butterfly events.
