EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University senior women's soccer players Aileen Guiney (Naperville, Ill./North) and Molly Greene (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) were named first-team All-Big Ten for 2003. The honor comes by vote of the conference coaches and was announced Wednesday night by the Big Ten Conference.

It is the second time both women have been named to the All-Big Ten first team during their careers. Guiney was a first-team selection last year, while Greene was a first-team pick in 2001 and earned second-team honors in 2002. This marks just the third time in school history two Wildcat players have earned first-team honors in the same season; the others were the two seasons Northwestern made the NCAA Tournament, 1996 (Cathleen Cooke and Erica Westrich) and 1998 (Kristen Palmer and Westrich).

Freshman midfielder Shannon Schneeman (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) joined her senior teammates in receiving All-Big Ten honors. Schneeman was named to the Big Ten's All-Freshman Team, the first Wildcat player in history to record the honor.

"I am really happy to see these three women get honored," said NU head coach Jenny Haigh, whose team completed its season last weekend at 7-10-1 (3-6-1 Big Ten). "They really deserve it-they were steady for us all year, and it is great to see their efforts and our program recognized by the other coaches in the conference. Those are three great women being honored for us."

Aileen Guiney, a midfielder, finished the 2003 season as the Wildcats' leading scorer, notching four goals and four assists for 12 points. She ended her career with eight goals and 20 assists for 36 points; her 20 assists is second all-time at NU and the 36 points are ninth. After missing the 1999 season to a knee injury, Guiney started all but one of the matches she played during the last four years and was one of the NU captains each of her last three years.

Molly Greene, a four-year starter at sweeper, anchored a defense that allowed 1.68 goals per game with a freshman goalkeeper. In addition, she scored the match-winning goal in a 1-0 victory against Michigan (Sept. 21) and added an assist. Greene started every match Northwestern played during her tenure; like Guiney, she was a three-time captain.

Shannon Schneeman started all but the first match of the season in the midfield for the Wildcats. She scored one goal, but it was the match-winner in overtime against Florida Atlantic (Sept. 5).
