EAST LANSING, Mich. - After being held scoreless in its last three matches, Northwestern broke out of its slump to defeat Stanford 2-0 in a nonconference match at Michigan State's home field.
Coming into the match, NU had been blanked by Michigan, Ohio State and Michigan State in consecutive matches. However, the Wildcats ended the scoring drought 22:16 into the match versus Stanford when freshman Meghan Small took a pass from Ellen Schlafly and beat Stanford goalkeeper Emily Zander to give the 'Cats a 1-0 advantage.
Junior Candice Cooper added an insurance goal at 65:22, scoring her team-leading fourth goal of the season, to give Northwestern a 2-0 lead.
Cooper and senior Diane Provencher attacked the Cardinal all match, firing nine shots on goal between the two.
Freshman Sherri-Anne Nyberg was strong in net for the 'Cats, stopping all seven shots the Cardinal sent her way, while Zander made 12 stops for Stanford.
