EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Three singles players survived a tough day for the NU men's tennis team at the ITA Midwest Championships hosted by Michigan State.
Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrugge) dumped Ohio State's Ross Wilson 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of the main singles draw. He will face Purdue's Paul Rose Sunday morning.
Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) was also victorious, slipping by Notre Dame's Ryan Keckley 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 to set up a match tomorrow with Louisville's Octavian Nicodim.
Wildcat 10th seed Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) edged DePaul's mark Henderson 6-4, 7-5 for Northwestern's third singles win. His next match will be against Michigan State's Chris Mitchell.
Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) was the only NU singles player to lose, dropping his match to Butler's 15th-seeded Kevin Gill 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
In the first round of doubles, Jamie Friedland (Glen Cove, N.Y./St. Stephen's) and Justin Hoeveler (Ross, Calif./The Branson School) slighted Iowa's Ryan Reid and Aaron Schaechterle 9-7. The Wildcat duo was unable to sustain momentum into round two, however, and lost to Illinois' eighth-seeded Ryler DeHeart and Pramod Dabir 8-2.
The NU team of Perrin and Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) fell in a similar situation. First they stomped Michigan's David Anying and Carey Rubin 8-2, but then they lost in the second round, an 8-4 decision to Notre Dame's fifth-seeded Brent D'Amico and Matt Scott.
In other doubles action, Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) and Ahmed Wahla (Lahore, Pakistan/Lahore American School) were beaten by Butler's Brandon and Kevin Gill 8-6, while Hanus and Schaechterle were defeated by Ohio State's ninth-seeded Scott Green and Ross Wilson 9-7.
Northwestern now has only singles players remaining in the six-day tournament, which continues tomorrow morning.
