KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Freshman Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) shot a 1-over 73 on Tuesday -- Northwestern's best round of the day -- and helped the Wildcats place seventh among the 17 teams in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships. Among Big Ten schools entered at the Mercedes-Benz, the Wildcats finished second out of the five league teams.
Ohio State won the tournament in exciting fashion, edging Oklahoma State by one stroke. The Buckeyes finished with a tourney-record 20-over 884. The Wildcats, who finished in front of Michigan State (eighth), Penn State (15th) and Purdue (17th), as well as Tennessee (10th), the host school, shot a 41-over 905 (307-397-301).
Kim's strong finish helped her place 24th overall at 8-over (76-75-73=224). Classmate Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Middlesex School) was NU's top finisher, placing ninth at 5-over (72-75-74=221). Robb finished four strokes behind tourney medallist Allison Hanna of Ohio State.
Junior Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) finished 38th with a 13-over 229 (79-73-77). Senior Lauren Grzebien (Saunderstown, R.I./Narragansett) and junior Mary Ellen Grzebien (Saunderstown, R.I./Narragansett) placed 62nd and 79th, respectively. Lauren fired a 5-over 77 on Tuesday to finish at 19-over (84-74-77=235) while Mary Ellen came in at 28-over (80-79-85=244).
The Wildcats, ranked 44th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll, now take a few months off before returning to play in mid-February.
