Northwestern Names Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week

Oct. 20, 2003

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named Bryson Young (Reno, Nev./Galena) and Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.

Young, a sophomore on the golf team, turned in his top collegiate performance to date, finishing in a second-place tie at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational last week. Young fired the three lowest rounds of his career --69, 67 and 70--to finish at 7-under. His previous best finish came at last year's Rice Intercollegiate where he placed ninth.

Young's play helped the Wildcats finish second among the 16 schools and jump to No. 29 in the Golfweek/Sagarin national ranking.

Cooper, a junior midfielder on the field hockey team, exploded for three goals over the weekend against Indiana and California en route to being selected Athlete of the Week for the second time this year. She leads the Wildcats in points, goals and assists and helped the Wildcats improve their season record to 7-7.

Cooper was also named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week today, the second time she has received the honor.
