BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Northwestern claimed its first Big Ten victory of the season with a 3-2 win over Indiana in Bloomington Friday. NU had been waiting for a breakout game in conference play and certainly received it against the Hoosiers.
With the win, NU improves to 6-7 overall and more importantly, break into the win column in conference play at 1-4.
The Wildcats opened the match in dominant fashion. Sophomore Hollly Palin scored an unassisted goal at 10:55 to give the 'Cats a 1-0 advantage.
Candice Cooper scored her fifth goal of the season at the end of the half when she converted on a penalty corner. Christine Nannicelli stopped the ball and Cooper blasted it past Indiana goalkeeper Katie Kanara to give the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage at the break.
Northwestern began the second half in fashion they closed the second. Freshman Megan Sieberg extended the Wildcat lead to 3-0 when she tallied an unassisted goal at 43:06.
Indiana, however, refused to go quietly.
Less than five minutes after the 'Cats jumped ahead 3-0, Lesley Wiler scored off a pass from Lydia Schrott to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Hoosiers' Jodi Murphy added a goal at 47:13 to make the score 3-2, but that was as close as Indiana would come. NU's defense clamped down on the IU attack for the remainder of the match to ensure the victory.
Sherri-Anne Nyberg had two saves for the Wildcats who will face California tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Bloomington, Ind.
