GLENVIEW, Ill. -- Northwestern, the defending Windon Memorial Classic team champion, remains in the hunt for a second straight title, but will have some work to do on Tuesday in order to make another championship a reality.
Fueled by a second-round 5-under 67 from Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) and a 2-under 70 from Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo), the Wildcats moved to within eight strokes of Minnesota, which leads the 17-team tournament with a 5-under 571 (283-288). The Wildcats were 11 strokes behind the Gophers and in ninth place after the first 18 holes.
Big Ten foes Illinois and Purdue stand between Northwestern and Minnesota. The Fighting Illini are three strokes behind the Gophers, and the Boilermakers are six strokes out of first.
Strunk is savoring the best tournament of his career, tied for third place at 4-under (73-67=140). He is five strokes behind the second-round leader, Peter Richardson of Purdue (67-68=135), who is 9-under. Illinois' Joe Affrunti is in second place at 5-under (73-66=139).
Johnson, the defending individual champ, is tied for ninth place at 1-under (73-70=143). Northwestern's third senior, T.C. Ford (Covington, La./Mandeville), is tied for 15th place at even par (70-74=144).
The third and final round concludes Tuesday morning.
